A wonderful plein air watercolor on paper by artist James Dexter Havens (1900–1960). The picture is a very pretty landscape scene of Eastham Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
The image measures 25 x 18, the frame 28 x 36.
The watercolor is signed "James D. Havens A.N.A" lower left, there is also a typed label on the reverse identifying the location and the year "August 1956."
Havens often painted pictures of nature and was said to have a fluid like hand while executing his works. Born in Rochester , NY Havens was diagnosed at age 14 with juvenile diabetes, by the age of 22, Havens was nearly at death when his father, a US Congressman and head of the legal department of Eastman Kodak Co. , was able, through is important connections, to procure the first insulin shot before it was even tested. The insulin therapy saved Havens life, and he went on to study art and wood blocking at Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (known today as the Rochester Institute of Technology RIT), in Henrietta, NY under Alling MacKaye Clements (American, 1891-1957), and at the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY. He also took summer classes at the Charles H. Woodbury (American, 1864-1940) Summer School in Ogunquit, ME. Havens has become very well known as the artist to bring back color woodblock in America. His works can be found in various museums and private collections. An accomplished artist with a unique note in history.
The picture is behind glass, it is in pristine condition, not removed from the frame.
The fading you see in the photo is not the picture but light reflection on the glass while photographing.
